Italian cardinal of the Catholic Church (1938–2024)
Angelo Amato, S.D.B. (8 June 1938 – 31 December 2024) was an Italian cardinal of the Catholic Church who served as the Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints between 2008 and 2018.
He served as Secretary of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith from 2002 to 2008 and became a cardinal in 2010.

Early life and education
Amato was born in Molfetta, Apulia, Italy on 8 June 1938.[1] He entered the Salesians after completing his novitiate at a Salesian high school. He studied philosophy and theology.[2]
He was ordained a priest on 22 December 1967, becoming a member of the Salesians of Saint John Bosco.
